Yeah...That's the point where the populist politician eats out the last remaining leftovers of the man of law that once was.

Ziad Baroud of all people? One would think that a guy like him would know a thing or two about the laws of freedom of speech.

most probably, it is you who don't
Well it's the intention that matters. Obviously the man was joking in private with his friends prior to the conference.
He didn't intend to voice his opinion publicly.

I blame the opportunistic media outlets for jumping on the opportunity to make someone's life miserable, completely mindless of the consequences of their act.

well here is the way i see it. anyone who behaves in such a way towards any elderly person who just passed away, does not possess what is needed to be at the helm of the workers' general union. let alone if that person is the patriarch, that adds another dimension to it.

there should be no question about it in anyone's mind. bshara el asmar is over. whether he faces judicial consequences or not is a different issue relating to free speech. there is however no escaping the consequences, he revealed himself as a z2a2e and he has already lost all respect, and that is by far more important than any verdict pronounced by a court, and as such he is no longer the viable option to head the syndicate.

now it is time to move beyond bchara el asmar, the question however is will nabih birri accept to have him removed without a political fight or not? it should pointed out that the leaders of the workers' syndicates should not be pawns in the hands of any politician. they should be independent and carefully chosen based on their character and ethics.

Do you at least agree that he should resign immediately from all his public posts?

You can be certain that Berri has not completely let Asmar loose until now because he hasn't started negotiating for something in return. I think we've established how Berri operates a long time ago.

it also goes without saying that most parties will jump on this opportunity to exert tremendous pressure to get el asmar removed. he is instigating all kinds of silly and meaningless strikes in the streets to put pressure on the government throughout the budget planning, akid the master manipulator is pulling his strings from behind the scenes.

Nope. Only if the man who once called Berri a baltajeh in private resigns because the cases are quite similar in my opinion.

Why “of all people” ? He has always been more attracted by spotlights than by truth and fairness. This statement reveals him precisely, for anyone who has any kind of doubts.

L’habit ne fait pas le moine...Let that be a lesson to everyone.

You can call for him to resign. But to arrest the guy! Sad country.

He does not like the Patriarch. Made a stupid joke. Get over it.
His joke was in poor taste :) reminds me of something you posted :)

Says who? The sheeps that can burn a TV station and close the roads and instigate public unrest just for a stupid joke.
And Berri is indeed a baltaji.

So Gebran gets to keep his post despite defaming the parliament speaker but Beshara has to resign for joking about some dead raisin with a red hat?
