Art & Literary Quotes

I visited this website and subscribed to receive Art quotes three times a week. I like to open this thread so we can share inspired quotes and post our impressions or opinions about it.

I begin with Picasso's famous quotes :)

  • Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don’t start measuring her limbs.

  • Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous. Where it is chaste, it is not art.

  • The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.

  • If there is something to steal, I steal it!.

  • Painting is stronger than me, it makes me do its bidding.

  • When we discovered Cubism, we did not have the aim of discovering Cubism. We only wanted to express what was in us.

  • People want to find a "meaning" in everything and everyone. That's the disease of our age, an age that is anything but practical but believes itself to be more practical than any other age.

  • Success is dangerous. One begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others. It leads to sterility.

  • Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.

  • I don't say everything, but I paint everything.

  • Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

  • Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this? no. Just as one can never learn how to paint.

  • Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

  • Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.

  • Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.

  • Nature does many things the way I do, but she hides them!

  • I begin with an idea and then it becomes something else.

  • There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.

A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to
canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something
which is, in itself, a living thing.
{William Dobell }

Don't let criticism get in the way of learning. Whatever negative
comments a teacher or a college or even your family may make,
consider them. Take it as an opportunity to see your work with a
different perspective. It is an opportunity to hear what the viewers
who you communicate with will be thinking before the work leaves
your studio.

One day it will have to be officially admitted that what we have
christened reality is an even greater illusion than the world of dreams.

{Salvador Dali}

Your life is the manifestation of your dream; it is an art. And you
can change your life anytime if you aren't enjoying the dream.
Dream masters create a masterpiece of life; they control the
dream by making choices.

{Don Miguel Ruiz}

Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand,
as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply
necessary to love.

I tell you, the more I think, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.
Vincent van Gogh

The emotions are sometimes so strong that I work without knowing it. The strokes come like speech.
Vincent van Gogh

It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures.

+ "Still lifes are always ready to pose. They don't talk or get tired or need to eat. They possess all the qualities of form and color that are needed to keep a painter occupied for the rest of his life."

"A good painter has two main objects to paint, man and the intention of his soul. The former is easy, the latter hard as he has to represent it by the attitude and movement of the limbs."

one of my favorite composers Ludwig van Beethoven say :

Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman.

I despise a world which does not feel that music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy, Music is the wine of a new procreation, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for men and makes them drunk with the spirit.

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.

Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend.

[Alex Listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony]

"Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures! "

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Any healthy man can go without food for two days..
but not without poetry.

::: Charles Baudelaire :::

Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult.
It demands that you know how to draw well, that you
have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for
colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential.

::: Kandinsky :::

little afraid. Anything as long as it doesn't bore.
