Under 'financial siege', Lebanon must stave off strife, says Bassil

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon is facing a “financial siege” imposed by international powers and its priority is staving off strife caused by the country’s economic meltdown, leading politician Gebran Bassil said on Tuesday.

Bassil, an ally of the Iran-backed Shi’ite group Hezbollah, said he supported talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), hoping they would pressure the state into reforms, but that Lebanon was running out of time and any foreign aid could not come at the price of sovereignty.

Talks with the IMF were put on hold last week after becoming bogged down by a dispute on the Lebanese side over the scale of losses in the financial system and pending the start of reforms to address the root causes of the crisis, seen as the biggest threat to Lebanon’s stability since the 1975-90 civil war.

The government of Prime Minister Hassan Diab, which is backed by Bassil and Hezbollah, has yet to embark on serious reforms sought by donors including the United States and France, which say Beirut must fix state waste and corruption before any aid is released.

“What we are subjected to is an economic, financial and political siege ... This doesn’t pardon the state and the Lebanese from their mistakes ... at the forefront of them — corruption,” Bassil said in an interview.

“When there is a desire to help Lebanon, tomorrow the gates will be opened. And when there are great powers blocking the gates, Lebanon does not have capacity to open them.”

“The absolute priority ... is how to keep Lebanon away from anarchy and strife.”

Lebanese must also be protected from extreme poverty, said Bassil, a son-in-law of President Michel Aoun.

Hezbollah is classified as a terrorist group by the United States. The group’s influence in state affairs has grown since it won a parliamentary majority with its allies in 2018.

Opponents say the alliance forged by Aoun and Bassil with the heavily-armed Hezbollah has provided political cover for its arsenal.

Though critics say he exercises wide influence over the government, Bassil said no ministers were members of the Free Patriotic Movement he leads, and the cabinet must accelerate reforms.

“We don’t accept this model of low productivity,” he said of the government, which he said could not continue if it failed to do more.

Asked if he saw a risk to peace, Bassil said: “Of course this fear exists.”

The response, he said, was “in national unity” and dialogue.

He warned of the risk of “an international game” unfolding to weaken Lebanon or “a party in Lebanon such as Hezbollah”.

“Syria must be a lesson for all. It would be a shame to take Lebanon on the path to destruction once again,” he said.

What financial siege is Bassil talking about ?
Is there anything forbidden from entering Lebanon ?
Are there any money transfers not allowed to Lebanon ?
Did the IMF refuse to talk to us ?

How else will the entire political class justify its failure to reform but blame it on others?

It depends where it is coming from, which the world knows where it is coming from, they can provide alternatives for these goods or services Lebanon gets from syria but they are not. Just like when they did give 6 months for countries importing from Iran before applying the embargo on all countries. But the world doesn't care about Lebanon, they consider it part of the axis Syria, Iran, Lebanon and should suffer along for not getting in line.

It depends who is us, there is a deep state in Lebanon ruled by bankers, and these bankers have enough power to rule the state without being present in the government. These bankers have a good relation with the IMF and are doing their political bid in Lebanon, If they were not that powerful then the state would have been able to negotiate with the IMF. In the meantime these bankers are able to get their money out and movie to other banks in the west with impunity. There is an implicit facilitation of the existence of this deep state. As we know the IMF doesn't give money for free, they need to transform a country and have it fall in a certain political and economical line that intersects with western interests and these bankers will definitely part of the game, so they play the 7ikkili ta 7ekkelak game.

    The Tsunami of bankruptcies begins...*

See the US economy landscape :

    8. US Treasury printing trillions to try to keep the economy on life support - their balance sheet will become $7 T+

    9. Estimated no. of retail stores closing in 2020 - 12,000 to 15,000. The following are big retailers that have announced closing:

    -- J. Crew
    -- Gap
    -- Victoria's Secret
    -- Bath & Body Works
    -- Forever 21
    -- Sears
    -- Walgreens
    -- GameStop
    -- Pier 1 Imports
    -- Nordstrom
    -- Papyrus
    -- Chico's
    -- Destination Maternity
    -- Modell's
    -- A.C. Moore
    -- Macy's
    -- Bose
    -- Art Van Furniture
    -- Olympia Sports
    -- K Mart

    and many many more...

World-renowned brands from January to May because of the impact of the epidemic:

    Rolex discontinued production,

The world’s luxury industry has ceased production,

Nike has a total of 23 billion US dollars, preparing for the second stage of layoffs,
    Needless to say about travel,

The founder of Airbnb said that because of the epidemic, 12 years of efforts were destroyed in 6 weeks,

Even Starbucks also announced "to permanently close 400 stores"

Under the weight of the new crown epidemic, many giants are facing the crisis of failure!

Five months of the epidemic, 780 million people were in debt, and tens of thousands of companies went bankrupt, so the company was seriously replaced.

Massive mortgage loan defaults, credit card defaults and auto loan defaults are expected

The real impact of Covid -19 will be known in the third quarter of 2020.

Unemployment claims reached an all-time high of 38+ million - unemployment is over 25% (out of 160 million of work force, close to 40 million are jobless). With no income, consumer demand is falling drastically and the economy will go into a free fall.

That's what happens when there's an ongoing public health crisis. You're going bankrupt regardless.

See you at the American embassy.

There are a few people (like Rafidi) who still believe their sayyid and buy what he tells them verbatim. Others (like Viral/NewLeb/Convergence/Dirty Dragon/hola!) know their sayyid is a lying pos and don't care because ideology or petty self-interest are more important.

The Lebanese are in for a rude awakening. But Hizbullah hasn't been ethnically cleansing Syrian towns of their Sunni populations for nothing.

Hizbullah should remember well the proverb: من حفر حفرةً لأخيه وقع فيها

Can't just understand why they want to radicalize the whole country and turn it into another Iran...
Is that what Israel wants on its northerner border?
Or maybe they think they can change peoples' feelings and beliefs by starving them...
Or maybe they never made such mistakes before.
Iran became an independent high thech. self sufficient country with a space program while Saudi Arabia is being looted and blackmailed by Trump telling them without his protection the Saudis will be speaking Persian in a week's time. Makes you wonder if his administration made an under the table deal with the Iranians to keep the whole Gulf under his mercy. After all, wasn't Bush Sr. the one who tricked Saddam the idiot into invading Kuwait for the same purpose and succeeded flawlessly until Jr. ****ed it up? Saddam hated the Persians and used chemicals against them. Are the Sunni regimes in the Gulf better off today with the Iranian influence in Iraq at their borders? Saddam used to be a buffer zone between Iran and the Arabs.
Surely someone will tell us the Americans knew what they were doing...
Ask the Israelis if they are better off today with Iran as an enemy rather than Iraq/Saddam... If so, Mabrouk and let them thank Washington for that...

Well it is a fact, in 1982 it took Israel few days to reach Beirut... ya3ne if our newborn resistance people (currently known as HA supporters) even attempted to resist with only stones and blocking roads, they would've delayed it... but unfortunately, it is also known and documented, they welcomed Israelis as their liberators :)... whereas Beirutis (and of course palestinians) resisted the siege of Beirut for 70+ days.

Wa min soukhriyat al qadar, they accused Charbel Nahhas of treason few months ago when he mentioned this part of history... these people live in alternative dimension, and this new generation of southerners don't know that their daddies welcomed Israelis with open arms because they taught them a skewed version of history.
