The citizenship issue of 94 is a big issue for some lebanese including myself.
At least 150K people from Syrian/Palestinian origins were given citizenship to change the demographic balance and to change the results of elections in some districts.

FPM was a pioneer and always talking about this issue. Where are they now? We need this issue fixed. Where is Marwen Charbel on this issue? The North especially has been affected by this decision by the illegal government back then in Lebanon which we need resolved.

FPM was also a pioneer in working to get back the lebanese in syrian prisons.
It totally forgot about that now

It was also a pioneer in accusing Joumblatt of stealing the church bells in the chouf.
    Now, it's hit with Alzheimer's.

This issue is a big issue especially as it has affected the North demographically. Alot of people have received citizenship for no reason at all. This is 'tawtin' and most are against it, so what is being done?
FPM have 10 ministers in the government and have a block of 27 MP's. What is being done about this issue? Abi Nasr used to talk about this issue all the time. We need action. This is a perfect time to revoke the citizenships of those who were given it.

It's not only big, it set a scary precedent.

Whenever FMers and LFers say that Hariri can never give the citizenship to anyone without general consent, they have to be reminded that in 94, he bought off the president and was able to do it.

And nothing would stop him from doing it again.

Unfortunately, the FPM, once in power, forgets all about these major issues

    Wasn't it 150K muslims and 150K christians?!
The Christians should keep their citizenship, because Lebanon is for Christians.

Then take the citizenships of both. This is a big issue which we need resolved. There are many issues that should be addressed which noone is doing anything about.

In a first step toward reversing a 1994 decree deemed largely illegal, President Michel Sleiman signed a new decree revoking the Lebanese nationality from 175 people on Friday. While this may be an attempt to win support among Christians, who adamantly opposed the 1994 decree that gave thousands of non-Lebanese people citizenship, the small number of revocations drew fire from the only political party to publically address the decision.

It has been nearly a decade since the Shura Council, a consultative body that rules on the constitutionality of laws and decrees, advised that the 1994 decision gave citizenship to many foreigners who did not meet the legal requirements to become Lebanese. It is unclear why the president chose to act on that decision now, given it was issued in 2003.

According to Nemetallah Abi Nasr, a Change and Reform bloc MP from Kesrouan, his consistent pressure was the reason Sleiman chose to act. Abi Nasr spearheaded a campaign against the 1994 decree—viewed as orchestrated by the Syrians, whose troops were then occupying the country, as a means to ensure themselves electoral victories in future parliamentary elections. Most of those who became citizens were Muslims.

Numbers on how many people were naturalized by the decree vary. A 1997 UNHCR report said the decree never specified the exact number, though noted that the press at the time estimated 100,000 benefited. Abi Nasr put the number at 250,000, while one researcher said there were 400,000.

The official reason given for passing the 1994 naturalization decree was to address the problem of people living in Lebanon without any official documents—which applied to Bedouin populations in the far north and Shia residents who fled seven villages in the South in 1948 after the creation of Israel.

At the time, Abi Nasr was director of the Maronite League as well as the group’s lawyer. He said he began petitioning the Shura Council to review the decree, but the council did not issue a decision until 2003. Following that, Abi Nasr said, pulling out a copy of the decision from a stack of papers on his desk, a committee was created to investigate those who received citizenship.

Many of the new Lebanese nationals were Palestinians, had criminal records, or had either never been to Lebanon or did not live in the country for an extended period of time—all of which disqualify a person from becoming Lebanese according to local laws, Marwan Saqr, a constitutional lawyer, told NOW Lebanon.

“There are criteria in the nationality law, but ultimately the law is vague, so the ultimate decision [on giving nationality] rests with the Interior Minister,” Saqr said. He noted that any child born to a Lebanese man, or any woman who marries a Lebanese man, is automatically given nationality.

Some of the people who received citizenship also did so based on forged or fraudulent documents, according to a news report at the time of the Shura Council’s decision.

Abi Nasr insists there is still more work to be done and that more people will likely have their citizenship revoked. In fact, he said that in 2004 the committee studying the issue suggested revoking nationality from 1,900 people but that the recommendation was never implemented.

The Kataeb Party, the only political organization to release a statement to the press on this topic, basically called it too little too late.

A source close to Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who signed the decree along with the president and Interior Minister, told NOW Lebanon that Sleiman pushed for the recent decree and was not sure why action was taken now. Attempts to reach both the president and the Ministry of Interior were unsuccessful. NOW Lebanon spoke with several people initially assigned to the committee in 2003, and all said that it was disbanded that same year and that inquiries should be sent to the Ministry of Interior. It is unclear what will happen to those who recently lost their Lebanese citizenship.

Abi Nasr, however, said he will keep pressuring the government to fully address this issue.

“Nothing happens if you don’t push,” he said.

Very Happy. Hopefully it is implemented with this government to the max.

Every person who received nationality illegally should have them taken them away whether be muslim or christian. We are not playing the sectarian game here. Every person so be it.

What is this whole JOKE about here ? The whole 1994 decree is racist and illegal. In Lebanon you cant give citizenship to a community without giving to the other.
Only thing they found is to remove citizenship from 2000 people who turned out to be Assyriens ??? What a shame, we all know that the decree is illegal and nationality must be removed from the ones who acquired in 1994.

This is a key issue that FPM needs to tackle asap
