Pleasantly sweet and tart, passion fruit or granadilla is rich in health benefiting plant nutrients. Botanically this exotic fruit belongs to the family of Passifloraceae, of the genus Passiflora. Scientific name: Passiflora edulis.

    Saffron is one of the highly prized spices known since antiquity for its color, flavor and medicinal properties. It is the dried "stigma" or threads of the flower of the S. crocus plant. The plant is a bulbous perennial plant that belongs to the family of Iridaceae, in the genus, Crocus, and known botanically as Crocus sativus.

    Eating more than five a day has ‘no extra health benefit,’ claim researchers

    Eating more portions of fruit and vegetables than the recommended “five a day” has no additional benefit on reducing a person’s risk of death, researchers have suggested.

    The findings contradict recent research which found that eating “seven a day” holds the lowest risk of death. The latest study, published on, examined the association between fruit and vegetable intake and risk of premature death.

    Consuming five portions of fruit or vegetables is linked to a lower risk of premature death, but eating more portions appears to have no further effect, the study concluded.

    Researchers from China and the US analysed 16 studies involving more than 830,000 participants. Higher consumption of fruit and vegetables was significantly associated with a lower risk of death from all causes, particularly cardiovascular disease.

    They found the average risk of death from all causes was reduced by about 5 per cent for each additional daily serving of fruit and vegetables. But once a person had consumed five portions, there was no additional benefit noted for extra portions.

    Brushing our teeth – we all do it, once in the morning, once before bedtime, and we all think we know the best technique.

    However, it would seem that after all we don’t and, more worryingly, neither do our dentists, the people who make our toothbrushes, nor even Her Majesty’s Government.

    A new study, by dental experts at University College London, has condemned “unacceptably inconsistent” advice from national dental associations, manufacturers and dentists themselves on the simple matter of brushing teeth.

    Across 10 countries, researchers identified no fewer than six basic methods of brushing, and a bewildering variety of advice on the most important aspects of dental hygiene: how often to brush, how long to brush for, technique, and the vexed question of to rinse or not to rinse.

    The authors said there appeared to be “no consensus among professional bodies on the best method of toothbrushing for the general population or for people of different ages or with particular dental conditions”.

    “Such diversity in recommendations should be of serious concern to the dental profession,” the study, published in the British Dental Journal, concludes.

    Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, who helped write the Government’s official guidance on oral health, admitted that experts “struggle” over toothbrushing recommendations.

    “When you actually look at the science there is no clear evidence around what method might be best, and the recommendations on toothbrushing intervals also vary hugely around the world,” he said.

    In the UK for instance, widely followed advice says to brush for two minutes twice a day. But many countries recommend three minutes, while most South American countries advise brushing for one minute, three times a day.

    “I think the toothbrush manufacturers have been guilty of not doing as much research as they might and in the scientific community it’s probably not seen as a sexy area of research,” said Dr Carter. “Hopefully what [the UCL study] will do will focus some scientists on doing some more robust research on both the various techniques of brushing and the brushing intervals.”

    The most-commonly recommended method is known as the modified bass – which involves horizontal brush movements, accompanied by vertical and sweeping motions to create circles. However, no large studies have been carried out to determine whether it is really more effective than other simpler methods – including the most basic scrub technique taught to children.

    Dr John Wainwright, the study’s lead author and a practising dentist, said that “all too frequently” he encountered patients concerned that his recommendations differed to what previous dentists had told them.

    “What I feel we need is better research into what the easiest to learn, most effective and safest way to brush is,” he said. “The current situation where not just individual dentists, but different dental organisations worldwide are all issuing different brushing guidelines isn't just confusing – it's undermining faith and trust in the profession as a whole. For something most people do twice a day, you would expect dentists to send a clearer, more unified message to their patients on how to brush their teeth.”

    There is no consensus over the very best way to brush, but UCL’s Professor Aubrey Sheiham recommends:

    1- Brush gently with a simple horizontal scrubbing motion
    2- Avoid brushing too hard, hold the brush with a pencil grip, not a fist
    3- The British Dental Association (BDA) add that brushing should take two minutes, twice a day
    BDA experts also recommend spitting, not rinsing, after brushing.

    15 'Healthy' Foods That Are Actually Bad For You

    Unhealthy foods are the main reason the world is fatter and sicker than ever before.

    Surprisingly, some of these foods are considered healthy by many people.

    Here are 15 “health foods” that are really junk foods in disguise.

    1. Processed “Low-Fat” and “Fat-Free” Foods

    The “war” on saturated fat is the biggest mistake in the history of nutrition. It was based on weak evidence, which has now been completely debunked (1).
    When this started, processed food manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon and started removing the fat from foods. But there’s a huge problem… food tastes horrible when the fat has been removed. That’s why they added a whole bunch of sugar to compensate. Saturated fat is harmless, but added sugar is incredibly harmful when consumed in excess (2, 3).

    The words “low-fat” or “fat-free” on a packaging usually mean that it is a highly processed product that is loaded with sugar.

    2. Most Commercial Salad Dressings

    Vegetables are incredibly healthy. The problem is that they often don’t taste very good on their own. That’s why many people use dressings to add flavor to their salads, turning these bland meals into delicious treats. But many salad dressings are actually loaded with unhealthy ingredients like sugar, vegetable oils and trans fats, along with a bunch of artificial chemicals. Although vegetables are good for you, eating them with a dressing high in harmful ingredients will totally negate any health benefit you get from the salad.

    Make sure to check the ingredients list before you use a salad dressing… or make your own using healthy ingredients.

    3. Fruit Juices… Which Are Basically Just Liquid Sugar

    A lot of people believe fruit juices to be healthy. They must be… because they come from fruit, right? But a lot of the fruit juice you find in the supermarket isn’t really fruit juice. Sometimes there isn’t even any actual fruit in there, just chemicals that taste like fruit. What you’re drinking is basically just fruit-flavored sugar water. That being said, even if you’re drinking 100% quality fruit juice, it is still a bad idea. Fruit juice is like fruit, except with all the good stuff (like the fiber) taken out… the main thing left of the actual fruit is the sugar.

    If you didn’t know, fruit juice actually contains a similar amount of sugar as a sugar-sweetened beverage (4).

    4. “Heart Healthy” Whole Wheat

    Most “whole wheat” products aren’t really made from whole wheat. The grains have been pulverized into very fine flour, making them raise blood sugar just as fast as their refined counterparts. In fact, whole wheat bread can have a similar glycemic index as white bread (5). But even true whole wheat may be a bad idea… because modern wheat is unhealthy compared to the wheat our grandparents ate. Around the year 1960, scientists tampered with the genes in wheat to increase the yield. Modern wheat is less nutritious and has some properties that make it much worse for people who are intolerant to gluten (6, 7, 8). There are also studies showing that modern wheat may cause inflammation and increased cholesterol levels, at least when compared to the older varieties (9, 10).

    Whereas wheat may have been a relatively healthy grain back in the day, the stuff most people are eating today is best avoided.

    5. Cholesterol Lowering Phytosterols

    There are certain nutrients called phytosterols, which are basically like plant versions of cholesterol. Some studies have shown that they can lower blood cholesterol in humans (11). For this reason, they are often added to processed foods that are then marketed as “cholesterol lowering” and claimed to help prevent heart disease. However, studies have shown that despite lowering cholesterol levels, phytosterols have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and may even increase the risk of heart disease and death (12, 13, 14).

    6. Margarine

    Butter was demonized back in the day, due to the high saturated fat content. Various health experts started promoting margarine instead. Back in the day, margarine used to be high in trans fats. These days, it has less trans fats than before but is still loaded with refined vegetable oils. Margarine is not food… it is an assembly of chemicals and refined oils that have been made to look and taste like food. Not surprisingly, the Framingham Heart Study showed that people who replace butter with margarine are actually more likely to die from heart disease (15). If you want to improve your health, eat real butter (preferably grass-fed) but avoid processed margarine and other fake foods like the plague.

    Recommending trans fat laden margarine instead of natural butter may just be the worst nutrition advice in history.

    7. Sports Drinks

    Sports drinks were designed with athletes in mind. These drinks contain electrolytes (salts) and sugar, which can be useful for athletes in many cases. However… most regular people don’t need any additional salts, and they certainly have no need for liquid sugar. Although often considered “less bad” than sugary soft drinks, there really is no fundamental difference except that the sugar content is sometimes slightly lower. It is important to stay hydrated, especially around workouts, but most people will be better off sticking to plain water.

    8. Low-Carb Junk Foods

    Low carb diets have been incredibly popular for many decades now. In the past 12 years, study after study has confirmed that these diets are an effective way to lose weight and improve health (16, 17). However… food manufacturers have caught up on the trend and brought various low-carb “friendly” processed foods to the market. This includes highly processed junk foods like the Atkins bars. If you take a look at the ingredients list, you see that there is NO real food in there, just chemicals and highly refined ingredients.

    These products can be consumed occasionally without compromising the metabolic adaptation that comes with low-carb eating. But they don’t really nourish your body… even though they’re technically low-carb, they’re still unhealthy.

    9. Agave Nectar

    Given the known harmful effects of sugar, people have been looking for alternatives. One of the more popular “natural” sweeteners is Agave nectar, also called agave syrup. You will find this sweetener in all sorts of “health foods,” often with attractive claims on the packaging. The problem with Agave is that it is no better than sugar. In fact, it is much, much worse… One of the main problems with sugar is that it has excessive amounts of fructose, which can cause severe metabolic problems when consumed in excess (18). Whereas sugar is about 50% fructose and High Fructose Corn Syrup about 55%, Agave contains even more… up to 70-90%. Therefore, gram for gram, Agave is even worse than regular sugar.

    See, “natural” doesn’t always equal healthy… and whether Agave should even be considered natural is debatable.

    10. Vegan Junk Foods

    Vegan diets are very popular these days, often due to ethical and environmental reasons. However… many people promote vegan diets for the purpose of improving health (which is questionable). There are many processed vegan foods on the market, often sold as convenient replacements for non-vegan foods. Vegan bacon is one example.

    But it’s important to keep in mind that these are usually highly processed, factory made products that are bad for just about anyone, including vegans.

    11. Brown Rice Syrup

    Brown rice syrup (also known as rice malt syrup) is a sweetener that is mistakenly assumed to be healthy. This sweetener is made by exposing cooked rice to enzymes that break down the starch into simple sugars. Brown rice syrup contains no refined fructose, just glucose. The absence of refined fructose is good… but rice syrup has a glycemic index of 98, which means that the glucose in it will spike blood sugar extremely fast (19). Rice syrup is also highly refined and contains almost no essential nutrients. In other words, it is “empty” calories. Some concerns have been raised about arsenic contamination in this syrup, another reason to be extra careful with this sweetener (20).

    There are other better sweeteners out there… including low-calorie sweeteners like stevia, erythritol and xylitol, which actually have some health benefits.

    12. Processed Organic Foods

    Unfortunately, the word “organic” has become just like any other marketing buzzword. Food manufacturers have found all sorts of ways to make the same junk, except with ingredients that happen to be organic. This includes ingredients like organic raw cane sugar, which is basically 100% identical to regular sugar. It’s still just glucose and fructose, with little to no nutrients. In many cases, the difference between an ingredient and its organic counterpart is next to none.

    Processed foods that happen to be labelled organic are not necessarily healthy.Always check the label to see what’s inside.

    13. Vegetable Oils

    We are often advised to eat seed- and vegetable oils. This includes soybean oil, canola oil, grapeseed oil and numerous others. This is based on the fact that these oils have been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels, at least in the short term (21). However… it’s important to keep in mind that blood cholesterol is a risk factor, NOT a disease in itself. Even though vegetable oils can improve a risk factor, there is no guarantee that they will help prevent actual hard end points like heart attacks or death, which is what really counts. In fact, several controlled trials have shown that despite lowering cholesterol, these oils can increase the risk of death… from both heart disease and cancer (22, 23, 24).

    So eat healthy, natural fats like butter, coconut oil and olive oil, but avoid processed vegetable oils as if your life depended on it (it does).

    14. Gluten-Free Junk Foods

    According to a 2013 survey, about a third of people in the U.S. are actively trying to avoid gluten. A lot of experts think this is unnecessary… but the truth is that gluten, especially from modern wheat, can be problematic for a lot of people (25). Not surprisingly, the food manufacturers have brought all sorts of gluten-free foods to the market. The problem with these foods, is that they are usually just as bad as their gluten-containing counterparts, if not worse. These are highly processed foods that are very low in nutrients and often made with refined starches that lead to very rapid spikes in blood sugar. So… choose foods that are naturally gluten free, like plants and animals, NOT gluten free processed foods.

    Gluten-free junk food is still junk food.

    15. Most Processed Breakfast Cereals

    The way some breakfast cereals are marketed is a disgrace. Many of them, including those that are marketed towards children, have all sorts of health claims plastered on the box. This includes misleading things like “whole grain” or “low fat.” But… when you actually look at the ingredients list, you see that it’s almost nothing but refined grains, sugar and artificial chemicals. The truth is, if the packaging of a food says that it is healthy, then it probably isn’t. The truly healthy foods are those that don’t need any health claims… whole, single ingredient foods.

    Real food doesn’t even need an ingredients list, because real food IS the ingredient.

    ولفتت الدراسة الى أن النظام الغذائي في البحر المتوسط يتضمن أغذية مفيدة للدماغ وتحافظ على الذاكرة وتقي من الألزهايمر وأمراض الشيخوخة. فهو يقوم على الدهون غير المشبعة والصحية كالأسماك لاحتوائه على أوميغا 3 والمكسرات وزيت الزيتون والتي تنظم نسبة السكر في الدم وتساعد في الحفاظ على الذاكرة، والفواكه والخضروالحبوب الكاملة التي تعمل على تحسين الأوعية الدموية وحمايتها من الضرر وتبعدك من السكتات الدماغية.

    Sweeteners linked to rise in obesity and diabetes

    Sugar-free sweeteners could increase glucose intolerance and diabetes risk by affecting bacteria in the gut, a study has suggested.

    Far from improving metabolism and helping people to slim, widespread use of artificial sweeteners may be fuelling the obesity and diabetes epidemic, it is claimed.

    Scientists found that giving mice water laced with three commonly used sweeteners in doses corresponding to those recommended for humans caused them to develop glucose intolerance.

    The condition occurs when sugar levels in the blood rise and can lead to Type-2 diabetes, which affects around 2.7 million people in the UK.

    Tests showed that in mice, sweeteners altered the balance of gut microbes that have been linked to susceptibility to metabolic diseases. They also affected the composition and function of gut bacteria in a small number of human volunteers, resulting in glucose intolerance after one week.

    The lead researcher, Dr Eran Elinav, from the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, said: “This calls for reassessment of today’s massive, unsupervised consumption of these substances.”

    The study, reported in the journal Nature, found that people’s reaction to sweeteners varied depending on the kind of bacteria they harboured.

    Two different populations of human gut microbes were identified, one that induced glucose intolerance when exposed to the sweeteners and another that did not.

    Certain bacteria reacted to artificial sweeteners by secreting substances that provoked an inflammatory response similar to a sugar overdose, the scientists believe.

    British experts said the findings were interesting but urged caution. Dr Katarina Kos, senior lecturer and consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at the University of Exeter, pointed out that only seven human volunteers were studied, and that further confirmation would be needed “prior to making firm conclusions”.

    She added: “These findings support the widespread understanding that water is the healthiest option and we should avoid sweet and sweetened drinks. Water is the best drink to control blood sugar.”

    How peanuts are cooked may help explain why they are allergenic

    BROADLY speaking, East Asians and Westerners suffer the same types of food allergies in about the same proportions. But there is an exception. Westerners are roughly twice as likely as East Asians to be allergic to peanuts. This is a puzzle—as is the question of why anyone is allergic to peanuts in the first place.

    A paper in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology sheds light on both matters. The study it describes, conducted by Quentin Sattentau of Oxford University and his colleagues, found that mice are more likely to develop a peanut allergy in response to dry-roasted nuts than raw ones. Since dry roasting is more common in the West than in East Asia, that may explain the disparity of incidence. And the chemical changes induced by dry roasting help explain what causes peanut allergy in the first place.

    Dr Sattentau and his team injected their mice with proteins derived from raw or dry-roasted peanuts, to prime the animals’ immune systems. Then, they fed those animals raw or dry-roasted peanuts. Mice that had been primed with proteins from the dry-roasted nuts exhibited more robust immune responses to both diets. Their levels of antibodies—specifically of a type called immunoglobulin E (IgE)—rose significantly. High levels of IgE are the hallmark of an allergic reaction. Though the mice primed with raw-peanut protein also produced lots of antibodies, far fewer were IgEs.

    The difference, Dr Sattentau thinks, stems from the fact that dry roasting triggers what is known to chemists as the Maillard reaction, and to chefs as “browning”. The Maillard reaction is one between sugars and proteins that forms new, complex molecules called advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). These create many of the pleasant aromas associated with cooked foods, but are also suspected of causing certain allergies—including, it would now appear, peanut allergy.

    Indeed, Dr Sattentau showed that proteins derived from dry-roasted peanuts bind to dendritic cells, a type important to the immune response. Specifically, these proteins interact with cell receptor-molecules known to bind to AGEs. Dr Sattentau believes this binding is the molecular mechanism which triggers peanut allergy.

    Don’t go nuts

    Why, even so, most people can eat peanuts without ill effect, is probably a quirk of genetics. The genes that regulate the immune system are the most variable in the human genome so, peanutwise, some people are probably just dealt an unlucky hand by the genetic shuffling that created their own genomes out of their parents’.

    But for those people—and particularly for those among them for whom even proximity to peanuts risks anaphylactic shock—there is reason for hope. Results of an experiment published earlier this year by researchers at Cambridge University showed that exposing peanut-sensitive children to tiny amounts of the nuts can, over a period, slowly desensitise them. If this finding holds up it could mean that, though those who develop peanut allergy may never enjoy the things in the way that the rest of humanity does, at least effects of peanuts on them will be peanuts.

    Olive oil could help reverse a patient’s heart failure "immediately", scientists have claimed.

    Oleate - the fat found in the golden liquid - could help a diseased heart pump blood more effectively and use body fat as fuel, researchers at the University of Illinois have found.

    The most common reason a person may suffer from heart failure is when the muscle becomes damaged, including after a heart attack, through drug or alcohol abuse, and high blood pressure.

    Shortness of breath, both during activity or rest; swelling of the feet, ankles, stomach and lower back; and fatigue are all symptoms of heart failure.

    Currently, there is no way to reverse heart disease, and a combination of medication and lifestyle changes help patients manage their symptoms and keep their condition stable.

    Scientists made their findings based on previous studies which show that a healthy heart absorbs fat to keep pumping, but if damaged the muscle can no longer process or store far – starving it of energy.

    This means the heart is unable to work hard enough, and toxic fat deposits are left to clog up arteries.

    Scientists believe that oleate helps the body produce enzymes which break down fat so the heart is once again able to absorb it.

    "These genes are often suppressed in failing hearts," Douglas Lewandowski of the University of Illinois in Chicago told the Telegraph.

    "So the fact that we can restore beneficial gene expression, as well as more balanced fat metabolism, plus reduce toxic fat, just by supplying hearts with oleate is a very exciting finding.

    "This gives more proof to the idea that consuming healthy fats can have a significantly positive effect on cardiac health."

    To make their findings published in the journal ‘Circulation’, researchers analysed how rats hearts responded to oleate or aplmitate, the fat found in animal fats and dairy products.

    When oleate was pumped through a failing heart, scientists saw an “immediate” improvement in how the heart contracted and pumped blood, Dr Lewandowski explained.

    But, when animal fats were pumped through the heart, the heart disease worsened and more toxic fat was produced.

    The study is backed by previous research which shows a diet high in olive oil can have the same affect as statins in reducing the risk of a heart attack.
