Lebanese consumers learn they are eating shit

A man eats a hamburger at a McDonald's branch in Lebanon, which has recently come under fire from the Health Ministry. Al-Akhbar

    Published Wednesday, November 12, 2014

“They are feeding us shit,” literally – not figuratively – as informed by Health Minister Wael Abu Faour, who revealed during a press conference on Tuesday November 11, that samples taken from restaurants and supermarkets across Lebanon contained traces of “human excrement and sewage water.”
Abu Faour’s statement was the first “formal” acknowledgement by the Health Ministry of a serious case of food contamination in the country. It came after years of neglect by the state’s administrations towards their responsibility to protect the people and their health.
It seems that elites within the system were actively covering for merchants to the extent that the head of the Lebanese Traders Association, Nicolas Chammas, has often said that merchants “are obeyed and they obey no one.”
The public was not totally oblivious to this truth. The media, reports by the Consumers’ Association, and a number of experts and academics have recently uncovered hundreds of scandals, facts, complaints, and crimes committed by well known merchants and companies.
However, these criminals were never brought to justice, and the state did not shut down their businesses, nor did it impose restrictions on the way they deliver and handle food. The lack of action drove many to despair, which would explain the muted response to the bombshell dropped by Abu Faour yesterday. Most seem certain that the case will be closed soon, and nothing will be actually resolved.
Abu Faour mentioned 38 branches of restaurants, supermarkets, and butchers, located outside Beirut, and warned consumers about their products. Yet, the minister probably realizes that the owners will get away with their violations under the protection of the corrupt ruling system in Lebanon.
According to Abu Faour, these establishments are selling food that failed to meet basic health standards, with some of the products contaminated with salmonella, e. coli, and obligate aerobes.
The preliminary list revealed by the minister include “famous” and “international” franchises popular among Lebanese, especially children and young adults such as McDonald’s, Kababji, Spinneys, TSC Mega, Hawa Chicken, Hallab, and many others.
He further explained that the ministry received the tests’ results four days ago and that many samples were taken from restaurants and supermarkets inside Beirut, but those results are yet to be issued, which in turn generated speculation that the outcome will probably turn out even worse than the current report.
How did Abu Faour reach these results? And why did he decide to announce them?
He said that he “dispatched inspection teams working for the Health Ministry, over the past 20 days, to investigate a number of establishments and examine food products that are being sold to the people, in order to make sure that they meet required health, hygiene, and cleanliness standards.”
“Samples were taken from various food products to be examined for quality at the laboratories of the Agriculture Ministry, the department of Scientific and Agricultural Research, and the Industrial Research laboratory,” the minister explained.
He added, “The campaign targeted 1,005 establishment across Lebanon; 400 in Mount Lebanon, 200 in the North, 250 in the Beka’a, 200 in the South, and 50 in Nabatiyeh” and it included “bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets, butcheries, sweets shops, artesian wells, and springs.”

“The Lebanese citizen’s food is not only dipped in sweat, but also in diseases, microbes, and has very limited state supervision.” – Wael Abu Faour, Lebanese Health Minister The minister further noted that, “3,600 samples were examined, and the tests were run on all kinds of meat, bread, cheese, and sweets such as ashta (clotted cream) and cream.”
Abu Faour flagged other violators that were not directly mentioned on the list, including al-Natour butcher shop, which was previously closed down temporarily for selling rotten meat. Al-Natour was also accused of selling expired Brazilian meat and throwing meat products on the ground, in total disregard of hygienic standards.
Abu Faour also revealed that the ministry “raided” the shop on Saturday night to take the samples, as to avoid the owners’ attempts to switch the meat, indicating that the results will come out tomorrow along with other samples taken from restaurants and establishments inside Beirut.
The minister additionally noted that the Tanmiya Food Retailer in the Bekaa Valley has been violating health standards by changing the production dates printed on their products by three months.
Other violations revealed by Abu Faour included establishments functioning without permits, having spiders and flies hovering around meat refrigerators that had temperatures set above the maximum required to preserve meat, having filth and overused blackened oil, as well as using rusty utensils and knives to cut and preserve meat, placing toilets in close proximity to the kitchen, and putting food on top of garbage bags.
The most alarming discovery in the report was that fecal matter was found in some of the samples.
“The Lebanese citizen’s food is not only dipped in sweat, but also in diseases, microbes, and has very limited state supervision,” Abu Faour said, announcing that warnings will be sent to the restaurants violating the law and citations will be issued against them, since the inspection department at the Health Ministry can act as the judicial police.
Speaking to Al-Akhbar, Abu Faour acknowledged that citations have already been issued against the violating establishments and that he will further ask Interior Minister Nouhad al-Machnouk to order local governors and municipalities to close departments that do not meet the standards of human consumption in these establishments until they rectify their situation.
Addressing the owners, Abu Faour said, “Those who want to stand against us should resort to the courts.”

[O]ur own information suggests that cleanness is an exception while [food] contamination is the rule.” Zouheir Berro, Consumers Lebanon chairman In his press conference, Abu Faour did not only defame the violating establishment but also his own ministry, revealing that a number of doctors in regions across Lebanon have been submitting fake reports, in which restaurants and supermarket are described as “good and acceptable” without actually inspecting them.He stated that the ministry has a health preservation department formed by a large number of inspectors, health monitors, and doctors working across Lebanon, who should be making routine visits to inspect the establishments that sell food products in order to ensure that they meet basic health standards, yet unfortunately this rarely happens.
For his part, Chairman of Consumers Lebanon, Zouheir Berro said the Health Ministry analysis had “proved the obvious since our own information suggests that cleanness is an exception while [food] contamination is the rule.”
“This has been going on for a long time and what we are witnessing today is the natural outcome of the lack of a food safety law and the absence of mechanisms that ensure the production of safe food,” Berro added.
“Supervision is only the end of the chain, while production is the basis. We should focus on the source of the food, like the Beirut slaughterhouse and farms, among others.”

Foods to Avoid for a Clean Body

    Sugar
Avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners. Excess sugar consumption has been linked to health issue from hypoglycemia and high blood pressure to acne, diabetes and depression. Sugar also feeds candida, and food cravings – both symptoms of a high toxicity level in the body. Replace sugar with natural sweeteners such as stevia and honey.

    Gluten/wheat
Avoid wheat and grains containing gluten. Gluten reduces nutrient absorption within the digestive track and enhances toxic buildup. Studies have found wheat to disrupt the body’s endocrine system, and has also been linked to diabetes and obesity, and even depression and schizophrenia.

Gluten can be found in pastas, bread, crackers, cereals, and other products made from grains such as wheat, oats, rye, spelt, kamut, bulgur, couscous, and barley. Replace by gluten-free whole grains such as brown rice, wild rice, millet, quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat.

    Dairy Products
Products made from cow’s milk contribute to mucus formation and enhance toxin retention. While infants typically have high concentrations of lactase, the chemical required for the intestinal absorption of lactose, adults typically do not. Dairy products today also contains hormones, pesticides and herbicides.

Dairy products include milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. Replace dairy in your diet with seed or coconut milk, coconut yogurt or organic goats cheese.

    Alcohol and Caffeine
Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages are toxic to the body, including coffee, tea and sodas. Alcohol and caffeine, plus the sugars that generally accompany them, bind to toxins and ease their absorption deep into the body.

    Fried Foods
Avoid fried foods, hydrogenated oils, margarines, etc. Hydrogenated fats’ melting point is around 42°C while the body’s temperature is at 37.5°C. This means that these fats can only be eliminated from the body by creating fever, putting undue strain on the body. These undigested fats then block arteries and accumulate toxins in the body.

Replace your unhealthy fats with coconut oil and avocado oil. They can be cooked at high temperature without turning rancid and they contain great brain nutrients.

    Processed Foods
Avoid processed, packaged and genetically modified foods. They often hide chemical ingredients, iodized salt, unhealthy fats and sugars – and in the case of GMOs, dangerous BT toxins. Eat fresh organic foods and cook from scratch, so you know what you’re eating.

Detoxing is a Way of Life
To avoid toxic build up, supporting your body with a clean diet, free of foods that create toxicity, is a great way to start.

But remember – Just as there is not one surefire way to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, the miracle detox diet or supplement doesn’t exist either. Detoxing is a way of life. Although you may not be able to eliminate all environmental exposures, making positive changes in factors you can control – such as your eating and skin care habits – are important to maintaining optimum health.

For safe body care and daily detox products that can assist the body in getting rid of these extra toxins, please checkout EarthSun.

Three things to improve your brain power in old age

Doing exercise, brain training and eating fish could be the three key components to maintaining brain power in old age, according to new research.

Scientists in Finland took 1,260 people aged between 60 and 77 on a two year study. The group was split into two groups, with one being given regular health advice while the other half was given a complete transformation of lifestyle - being given brain training programs, group exercise classes and being told to eat a Nordic diet - including two portions of fish a week.

At the end of the study, published in the Lancet and reported by the Guardian, the second group was found to score on average 25 per cent higher in mental tests, 85 per cent higher in organisational tests and an astonishing 150 per cent higher in processing speed.

Professor Miia Kivipelto of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, who conducted the research, said that it was not necessary to start hitting the gym; dancing is a good option because while it is active it is also fun and social. While recommended brain training methods included doing crosswords or sudoku, reading books and learning a new language.

The researchers will now follow the group for another seven years to see if the new lifestyle regime can help prevent Alzheimer’s.

    Healthy Cooking: Perilla Oil

    A healthier cooking oil.

If you’re using corn oil to cook, you may be missing out on a number of health benefits that other types of oil could provide. Perilla oil comes from a tall plant that grows in parts of Asia including China, India, Japan, and Korea. It also grows in North America, where it’s known by a number of other names, including purple mint, Chinese basil, and wild coleus.

Perilla oil is commonly used in Korean cuisine, and it can also be used as a drying oil or fuel. Pressed from roasted seeds of the plant, the oil generally leaves behind a nutty taste. More important than flavor, the oil has a very high omega-3 fatty acid content (over 50 percent fatty acid) compared to most other plant oils. The omega-3 content in perilla oil is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which you can also find in flaxseed, with lower amounts in walnuts, soy, and animal-based sources like fish oil.

Perilla oil also contains the vital omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fatty acids are beneficial to your health — especially for normal immune system functioning — and have been linked to improving memory-related conditions.

    It Can Help with Allergies
How does perilla oil help exactly? Past research, including a recent study involving perilla leaf extract, shows that the oil can help stop the chemicals that bring about allergic and inflammatory responses.

In another study, people with asthma were followed for four weeks and given perilla seed extract to see if their lung function improved. Results showed that perilla oil can improve airflow by inhibiting the production of compounds that lead to asthma.

Perilla oil might also prevent and treat a variety of other conditions, such as colon cancer and memory problems.

Past research suggests that fish oil and some vegetable oils, both of which contain large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, can lessen the risk of colon cancer. This has led scientists to test the effectiveness of perilla oil, which has even more omega-3 fatty acid content. In one study, results showed that getting just a small amount of perilla oil — about 25 percent of daily fat intake — can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids have also been widely known to improve learning and memory in children and adults — and can relieve other conditions such as nausea and sunstroke. However, there are new studies taking place that may have data that conflict these claims.

    Cooking with Perilla Oil

Rather than supplements, a better way to get these healthy fatty acids into your diet is through food, and cooking with perilla oil. Korean cuisine makes heavy use of perilla seed oil and it is especially popular for sautéing vegetables. It is an ingredient in Korean salad dressings, which gives them an earthy taste. If you end up buying perilla oil, just remember that its shelf life is much shorter than other oils — use it within a year.

In addition to the oil, the leaves themselves, called kketyip, are popular in Korean cuisine. Pickled perilla leaves, kkaennip jangajji, are a quick, spicy and tangy appetizer. For a perilla-infused condiment, you can boil perilla leaves and sesame leaves in soy sauce, then strain. The leaves can also be tossed and cooked into soups and stews.

Ultimately, considering the health benefits associated with perilla oil and its pleasant flavor as a cooking ingredient, its use would be a positive addition to your daily regimen.

    Does sex really induce labour?

Sex. It’s what got you into pregnancy, but is it also the pathway to getting you out?

Every year, one in five labours are medically induced in the UK, and induction is offered to all women who don't go into labour naturally by 42 weeks. Induction is not without its risks and discomfort, and it is understandable that women may look to some alternate method of inducing labour.

One American study reported that half of women who reach their due dates attempt to initiate labour through a variety of non-medical techniques. There is a proliferation of DIY methods to induce labour that can be found online, and one of the most common recommendations is to have sex. But does sex initiate labour?

There are biologically plausible reasons why having sex at term may help to speed the arrival of a baby. First, semen is a natural source of prostaglandins, which are used in synthetic form to encourage cervical ripening in preparation for labour. Second, sex plus or minus orgasm has been found to increase uterine activity, and nipple stimulation is also thought to stimulate the uterus to induce labour.

But despite the biological plausibility and popularity in the community, there has been very little scientific evidence so far to support sex as a method of inducing labour.

One study found that sexual intercourse at term was associated with earlier onset of labour. However, when the researchers repeated this study, they found the reverse: women who reported having sex at term were actually less likely to go into spontaneous labour than women who abstained.

A US study confirmed these results and also found no significant cervical changes for women who were sexually active at term compared with those who were not, disputing the cervical ripening hypothesis.

10 ways we damage our teeth without realising

We Brits are notoriously known for our ‘bad’ teeth, however I prefer to think that British people have a more natural, quirky and individual smile. Thanks to wider fashion trends and some A-list supporters, more and more of us are embracing unique smiles and realising that the over-white, blinding Hollywood smile, is not the best look.

Although most of us know to brush twice a day, there are many ways we can be damaging our teeth without realising.

    Brushing your teeth after breakfast

You should brush your teeth as soon you wake up to brush away the bacteria that has formed in your mouth overnight. Then after you have eaten breakfast, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash.

    Rinsing with water after brushing

Do not rinse after you have brushed your teeth as this washes away the fluoride in the toothpaste which is good for your teeth and helps prevent tooth decay. Just spit out the excess toothpaste.

Brushing your teeth straight after eating

You should wait for 30 – 40 minutes to allow saliva to naturally neutralise the low PH in the mouth caused by food and drinks before brushing. If you brush straight away the acid in the mouth gets brushed into the teeth and causes erosion and loss of tooth enamel, making the teeth sensitive and weaker over time.

    Using a hard bristled toothbrush

You should never use a hard bristled toothbrush; always use a medium-soft bristled toothbrush because it is far kinder to your teeth. Using a hard bristled toothbrush will damage the gums, root surface and protective tooth enamel.

    Snacking

If you are constantly grazing at your desk be aware that snacking in between meals is bad for your teeth as it increases the contact that food has with your teeth so can cause plaque to develop which leads to cavities. If you need to have a snack then try to stick to crudités as the raw vegetables help to clean your teeth naturally, or some unsalted nuts as they are full of calcium and vitamin D which help to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Using your teeth as a bottle opener

It is highly likely that at when you are socialising at a party at the weekend, someone will be there who decides that opening a bottle with their teeth rather than a bottle opener is a great party trick. Opening a bottle, packet of crisps or anything else with your teeth can be extremely damaging as wears away your teeth and you are far more likely to chip a tooth. If this does happen, keep the missing tooth in milk until you can seek emergency dental work.

    Drinking dark drinks

Darker coloured drinks such as rum and coke are the worst offenders when it comes to damage and erosion to the teeth as they have the lowest pH so are more acidic. You will be delighted to know that lighter coloured drinks such as champagne and Prosecco are better options for your teeth as they have a slightly higher pH value so will cause less damage. Cheers!

    Guzzling soft drinks

It is not just alcoholic drinks that can be harmful to your teeth, be mindful of the soft drinks that you are consuming too. Opting for a fruit juice over a fizzy drink will be slightly kinder to your teeth. If you are drinking fizzy drinks, drink them through a straw to minimize the sugar contact with your teeth which can lead to dental issues. Also, chew sugar-free chewing gum after drinks to help neutralize the acid in your mouth that damages your teeth.

    Flossing after brushing

Floss before you brush to loosen any food debris, flossing prior to brushing will act like a pre-wash for the teeth. Then brush your teeth and spit the toothpaste out but don’t rinse with water, this will keep fluoride on the teeth and help prevent the build up of plaque which can lead to cavities.

    Flossing backwards and forwards

Flossing is essential to your daily oral hygiene routine, however there is a particular technique to flossing that you must use to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Pass the floss gently through the contact point between the teeth and then rub the floss up and down the sides of each tooth and each side of the gingival papillae (pink triangle of the gum between the teeth), pull the floss out gently from the space under the gingival papilla or back through the contact points. Never pull the floss backwards and forwards on the gum as this will cause damage.

The four allergy myths you thought were true - but aren't

Allergies are on the rise across the developed world and hay fever and eczema have trebled in the last 30 years. Yet allergies are an area of much confusion and concern. Although 40% of people report having a food allergy, in fact only 1-5% do, and allergists commonly report spending most of their consultations refuting firmly held beliefs that have no scientific foundation.

Theories about allergy – some from medical research and some from lifestyle “gurus” – have led to conflicting information, making it hard to know what to believe. Because of this, Sense About Science worked with me and a number of allergists, immunologists, respiratory scientists and pharmacists to produce Making Sense of Allergies, a guide tackling the many myths and misconceptions about allergies. One common myth – something that I work on – is the link between allergies and exposure to microbes.

So here is a hygiene and allergy reality fact check:

Do fewer childhood infections mean more allergies?

No. Although a link between allergies and microbes is largely accepted, the idea that more infections during childhood reduces the chance of developing allergies is now discounted. This idea came from the hygiene hypothesis, proposed in 1989, which theorised that the 20th century’s increase in allergies was due to lower rates of infection in early childhood. This hypothesis was based on observations that larger family size protected against hay fever, while smaller families were thought to provide insufficient infection exposure because of less person-to-person infection.

Exposure to a normal range of microbes during the first months after birth is critical to developing the immune system, but there is no evidence that “regular” infections are important to boost general infection immunity or prevent allergies.

Are allergies up because of modern obsessions with cleanliness?

No. Our microbiomes, the population of microbes that live in and on our bodies, have altered from previous generations. This is not because of cleanliness, but because we interact with less diverse microbial environments than those of our largely rural ancestors. The idea that excessive cleaning has created “sterile” homes is implausible: microbes are rapidly replaced by organisms shed from us, our pets, raw foods and dust.

This understanding has come from the “old friends” mechanism, a refinement to the hygiene hypothesis that offers a more plausible explanation for the link between microbial exposure and allergies. It proposes that exposure to the diverse range of largely non-harmful microbes or parasites that inhabit our world are important for building a diverse microbiome that is vital for sustaining a well regulated immune system that doesn’t overreact to allergens like pollen. These “old friends” have co-evolved with humans over millions of years. By contrast most infectious diseases only emerged over the last 10,000 years as we came to live in urban communities.

Old friend microbes are still there, but we have lost contact with them due to lifestyle and public health changes over the past two centuries. Improved water quality, sanitation and urban cleanliness have massively reduced infectious disease, but inadvertently deprived us of exposure to these microbes. Changes in microbial content of food, less breastfeeding, more caesarean sections, urban rather than rural living and increased antibiotic use have also reduced early life old friends interaction.

Will relaxing hygiene reverse the trend in allergies?

No. We now know that relaxing hygiene will not reunite us with our old friends, but carries the risk of increased exposure to other microbes that can cause old and new diseases. Because it was originally called the “hygiene” hypothesis, and because the terms hygiene and cleanliness are used interchangeably, people often assume that “being less clean” implies being less particular about hygiene.

At the same time that allergies have increased, the threats of global pandemics and antibiotic resistance have increased, and hygiene is key to containing these threats. Protecting against infection is not about how clean our homes look or how often we shower, it’s what we do to stop germs spreading.

By using “targeted” hygiene practices such as hand washing, food safety and toilet hygiene, while encouraging everyday interactions with our microbial world we maximise protection against infection, while maintaining exposure to old friends.

Are synthetic chemicals linked to rising allergies?

No. Excessive use of cleaning and personal care products and antibacterials is sometimes said to be linked to allergies because it deprives us of microbial exposure. Antibacterial products are perceived to exacerbate this. However, because evidence suggests that general day-to-day home cleaning has no impact on microbial levels, it is unlikely to impact on our human microbiome. By contrast targeted disinfectant use, for example while preparing food, can reduce infection risks.

Many people believe that “man-made” chemicals are more likely to cause allergic reactions, leading to many synthetic substances in products being replaced by “natural alternatives”. However, the most common allergic reactions are to naturally occurring allergens, in foods such as eggs, milk and nuts, in common garden plants such as primroses and chrysanthemums, and things in the environment such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander. Some natural replacements for synthetic substances could actually increase the risk of allergic reactions.

You Should Probably Stop Using A Loofah In The Shower. Sorry.

If you use a loofah to get clean, it may be time to rethink your shower routine.

That spongy, handheld scrubber meant to exfoliate and lather suds around your naked body is actually the perfect home for bacteria. A 1994 study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology showed that the popular beauty accessory -- and we're talking the kind made from actual cucumbers, not plastic mesh -- can host and transmit pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that can cause disease in animals.

"Loofahs are hygienic to start out with," Esther Angert, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of microbiology at Cornell University, tells The Huffington Post. "It's how they are maintained that will affect their longevity."

Your loofah scrubs dead skin cells off of your body, which "get caught in all of the nooks and crannies of the fibrous matrix of the loofah," she explains. When you're done scrubbing, chances are you leave the loofah in the bathroom until its next use. This is the opportune moment for bacteria to cultivate. "The shower environment is a nice, humid environment -- there's not a lot of air circulation, and it's a great place for bacteria to hang out," she says. The bacteria eat any organic matter -- like those discarded skin cells -- left behind in the loofah.

Every time the loofah gets wet and does not dry properly, the organisms grow and grow. "You spread the bacteria that you washed off your body the last time,"Dr. Michele Green, M.D., New York-based board-certified dermatologist, tells HuffPost. "The loofah is spreading yesterday's dirt back on your body." When you're sloshing that lavender-scented body wash all over yourself to get clean, you're really scrubbing with lavender-scented bacteria.

Under the right conditions, this bacteria can lead to scary stuff, like staphylococcus -- better known as a staph infection. While your skin is a really resilient organ that has the capacity to protect you from a lot of germs, your pores and any open wounds or scabs are more vulnerable to the bacteria, Angert says. If you have open cuts and are "too aggressive with the loofah," you may further damage the skin barrier and may be "forcing the particles into a wound," Dr. Jessica Krant, M.D., board-certified New York City dermatologist and founder of Art of Dermatology LLC, tells HuffPost.

If you are attached to your loofah, there are steps you can take to lower the risk of it turning into a bacteria party.

    • Let it dry. Take the loofah out of that moist environment. "It's ideal to allow the shower area to have enough airflow to completely dry out between uses," says Krant. "Leave a window open, shower doors cracked open and consider keeping the wet loofah outside of the shower for more airflow. If you want to be extra cautious, soap up the loofah and rinse it out on its own after washing yourself and before letting it hang to dry," she says.
    • Replace it. "If it changes color or smells, it's time to get a new one," says Angert.
    • Microwave it. Proper cleaning is key. "Regularly hang the loofah outside the hot moist shower itself, on a daily basis and then occasionally microwave it for 20 seconds while damp, as they recommend for synthetic sponges," says Krant. (Avoid zapping your loofah with anything that has the potential to melt or catch fire and make sure it's fully damp throughout. Do not microwave plastic loofahs.)
    • Bleach it. You might also use bleach to rid the sponge of bacteria. "You could soak it in a solution of 5 percent bleach," Angert says. This would kill the bacteria, but she stresses the process is a tedious one.
However, it really may be time to abandon the loofah once and for all. "I actually strongly prefer that my patients use no loofah, washcloth or scrubby at all in the shower," says Krant. "Skincare should be gentle rather than harsh, and people spend a lot of time over-cleaning and stripping the skin of natural and healthy moisturizing oils that keep us from being itchy, dry and flaky," she says. Using disposable sponge pads or some ordinary over-the-counter body wash and your hand is enough to keep you clean.

U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials

    By Andrew Jacobs

A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly.

Based on decades of research, the resolution says that mother’s milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes.

    Why Breast-Feeding Scares Donald Trump

It comes down to public health abroad could hurt American companies’ profits.

The push by United States delegates to the World Health Organization to water down or scrap a simple resolution meant to encourage breast-feeding in underdeveloped countries was many things — bullying, anti-science, pro-industry, anti-public health and shortsighted, to name a few.
But it was not surprising. In fact, it’s just one of several recent examples of the administration’s zeal for badgering weaker countries into tossing public health concerns aside to serve powerful business interests. The baby formula industry is worth $70 billion and, as breast-feeding has become more popular in more developed countries, it has pinned its hopes for growth on developing ones.

In Town With Little Water, Coca-Cola Is Everywhere. So Is Diabetes.

SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico — Maria del Carmen Abadía lives in one of Mexico’s rainiest regions, but she has running water only once every two days. When it does trickle from her tap, the water is so heavily chlorinated, she said, it’s undrinkable.

Potable water is increasingly scarce in San Cristóbal de las Casas, a picturesque mountain town in the southeastern state of Chiapas where some neighborhoods have running water just a few times a week, and many households are forced to buy extra water from tanker trucks.

So, many residents drink Coca-Cola, which is produced by a local bottling plant, can be easier to find than bottled water and is almost as cheap.

She Took On Colombia’s Soda Industry. Then She Was Silenced.

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — It began with menacing phone calls, strange malfunctions of the office computers, and men in parked cars photographing the entrance to the small consumer advocacy group’s offices.

Then at dusk one day last December, Dr. Esperanza Cerón, the head of the organization, said she noticed two strange men on motorcycles trailing her Chevy sedan as she headed home from work. She tried to lose them in Bogotá’s rush-hour traffic, but they edged up to her car and pounded on the windows.

“If you don’t keep your mouth shut,” one man shouted, she recalled in a recent interview, “you know what the consequences will be.”
