Find a new planet: Stephen Hawking says humans must leave Earth in 100 years to survive

Humans will need to colonise another planet within the next 100 years to survive climate change, asteroid strikes and overpopulation, according to renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking.

In a documentary, Expedition New Earth - part of the BBC’s new science season Tomorrow’s World - Hawking and his former student Christophe Galfard will travel the world to find out how humans could survive in outer space.

In the series, Hawking claims that time is running out for the Earth and humanity will need to leave the planet for its survival.

The shows aims to find Britain’s greatest invention, by asking the public to vote on the innovation which has been the most influential in their lives, ‘The Telegraph’ reported.

Last month, Hawking had warned that the aggressive instincts of humans, coupled with the fast pace of growth in technology may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war, adding that only a ‘world government’ may prevent this impending doom.

Hawking had said that humans may lack the skills as a species to stay alive.

If the problem is the "aggressive instincts of humans," we would face the same issue on another planet.

It's easier to wise up and change our way of life on this beautiful planet of ours, than to find another planet that can sustain life.

But, since atheists like Hawking don't believe in God and objective values, they can't envision such possibility; hence, the outlandish idea of finding an inhabitable planet within 100 years becomes more "credible."

You are completely wrong. I as an atheist agree with you.
    So there. :p

But he has a point. When the likes of Trump get voted into power, what hope is there for our species?

I said "atheists like Hawking." You are not like Hawking. You are a Christian who hasn't realized he is a Christian yet :p

He didn't say in 100 years humans will be able to travel in space, he meant in 100 years earth will be doomed by overpopulation, climate change and continuous exploitation of its resources, and the only way for humans to survive is by colonizing other planets

Humanity DOOMED because Earth is destined to become lifeless red planet just like Mars, scientist warns

Our home world is losing its atmosphere with every second that passes, meaning that every living being is in peril

EARTH is slowly turning into a barren red world just like Mars and it spells DOOM for every living being on the planet.

That’s the terrifying warning from a top scientist who wants our species to wake up to the grim fate awaiting us.

Our lovely blue planet is destined to become a grim, barren and totally RED world
In a recent TED talk, she said that 400 pounds of hydrogen and almost 6.6 pounds of helium escape from Earth into space with every single minute that passes.

Eventually, this will cause such a massive change in the makeup of Earth's atmosphere that life will be unable to cling on any longer and the surface will be become blood red and barren.

She said the atmosphere is little more than a "tenuous veneer around our planet" which "allows life to flourish".

"It's such an amazing phenomenon that the fact it is disappearing should frighten you," she added.

This NASA pic of the Earth shows exactly how thin the atmosphere of our planet actually is
Mars was thought to have a weather system just like ours, which means it may even have been home to living organisms.

But it is believed to have underwent a massive process of atmospheric escape in which hydrogen disappeared into space, leaving oxygen behind.

It was this oxygen which is believed to have turned the planet red, by oxidising (rusting) the surface.

The same process is already happening on Earth, but is likely to speed up in the "far future" because the Sun is set to get brighter and brighter, until iteventually engulfs much of the solar system.

Hawking doesn't exactly qualify as atheist, he had his spiritual moments, and his more conservative answers in regards to the god question... I would say a better qualification is agnostic

In regards to the question of humanity needing to leave the planet, well yeah we don't need to leave but we need to kill off at least a third of humans in order to survive the next 100 years

Btw values are subjective by nature, there is no objective set of values- in reference to another post of yours- the closest you can come is a set of laws in a civil society, and even that is subjective

And, of course, our dear @Sicarii to be your debate mate :D

it makes no sense leaving to any other planet with this mentality. we have first to live in equilibrium with God, the universe and our fellow man, otherwise we will simply doom other planets to same misery earth is already basking in. now i am all with the few good guys gathering themselves and leaving a new world, leaving this one to those who deserve it :p
