You're focusing on the wrong thing here, the 16 million was intended for her father just under gift for tax evasion/money laundering reasons that's why she settled her first court case and her appeal was rejected. He was not blackmailed and this is not about his personal life. Our prime minister is involved in a scheme to defraud another country's government.
The tax evasion part is speculation. We know the father of the girl was involved in tax evasion related lawsuit. But that doesn't say anything about why our PM would transfer a 20 yo model large sum of money to cover here father's @$$. If anyone is refusing to pay tax, it is the father. I dont see why our PM should keep silent if he was asked to transfer money to the account of the girl instead of the father. He can come out to issue a statement that the money was meant for the dad and he had no relations with the girl. But then, how can we sweep under the carpet the allegations he met her in Seychelles and also bought her an expensive car worth over $200,000? If the PM has accepted to tarnish his reputation as a slut payer and patron in order for a man not to pay his govt tax, then it is a shame. If he patronized a slut, it is also a shame. If he keeps silent, it means one of the aforementioned two possibilities. The only way out is for him to come out and tell us the money was for the dad. Then let the dad face his govt and his daughter should prove Mr Hariri sought her for sexual gratification and rewarded her with money.

We are indeed in shameful times as a nation under Mr Saad Hariri. First his humiliating treatment in Saudi and his acceptance to kiss the @$$ of his abductors and praise them and now this. Whether he is covering up a tax evader or he is patronizing a slut, both are shameful.

i have zero trust in the media, in particular NYT, they publish all sorts of crap these days. i doubt hariri would have given that woman 16 million USD. what for exactly?? it is not like there were a shortage of women throwing themselves at him. the whole story does not make much sense.

in addition, its timing is very suspicious, given the protests and the pressure aiming to force our government to resign.

given proper motivation, people can be made to believe anything, some because they want to believe it, others because they fear it might be true.

It's not speculation since that's what the court has ruled. It's unlikely anyone would pay a casual mistress 16 million dollars out of the goodness of his heart no matter how much money they have. What is likely is that Hariri had shady business dealings with her father and paid this woman to hide the transaction under gift which she then used to fund her father's company and buy a luxurious house (her father's company was also concerned with real estate) if anything the car she got was the only payment intended for her for her services.

By the way he can't come out and issue that statement since it's better for him to be thought of as a stupid womaniser than someone involved in a money laundering and defrauding a government scheme

The court documents also show emails where she sends him her personal bank info and thanks him saying “thanks my Saad :):p

I think this is very murky water for hariri to say the least
Yes because that's the evidence she herself presented to prove that the transaction was indeed a gift, however the case was settled, and her appeal was rejected
