dont u think that u under sorveillance now with methods worst than those of the stasi ?
wih a slight difference ..the stasi was doing it to defend the state of workers a righteus cause ..we can argue critically about some excessive methods ..but on ther hand the today secret services are doing that to defend the privileges of the capitalist ruling class..

dissent for what ? there was some cases of excessive abuse .. but the dissident were in most cases western agent trying to sabotage the socialist state ..
go talk to any german from the east ..person to person talk and not let drifted by propaganda machines ..let him explain u about DDR.
we are talking about different time and different historical period...
but the today situation is not shining in capitalist world as u like to describe it .. cases of scandals are flooding on daily basis .
there will always be scandals and wrongdoings, no system is perfect nad human nature is very corruptible.
but i know that if i sleep tonight in my bed i wont wake up naked in a cell with a bucket of cold water splashing on my head.
i know the story of the DDR, i know how von paulaus came back to be the hero of that part of germany.
the stasi was infeltrated everywhere, it made people,neighbors, brothers, lovers wary of each other.
watch a german movie called das leben des anders, it very touching.

i was going to tell u that u are watching too much movies then i came to read the last sentence ..
well good that u watched "Das Leben der anderen " ,despite it is a bit propagandistic movie ,if u notices that the hero of this movie is the stasi officer ..to whom the main actor dedicated the book ..and to understand his dilemma .. and i note about a key scene in this movie
but seems that u dont understand the movies that u watch and build all ur political arguments based on it .but ill stay on the game and argue back on this same movie :
anyway thats not the way to know about a country like DDR ..the correct way is to understand how this country was built and on which ideals , values , how was the state organization , its politics internal and external , its social and economic politicies.. i know i know im complicating it on u but ...
..but if u want i can suggest u other movies ,, like Good Bye Lenin ..it worth watching..(ps. its a western movie and not comunist propaganda movie )

DDR was built by the the former general commander of the german 6th army that surrendered in stalingrad and was given by the soviets enough persuation of how good life would be with the soviets.
