Well, Beirut is the capital, the heart of Lebanon. It belongs to all Lebanese. It made sense to give it more importance.
Tourists won't be flocking to Lebanon to see Tarik El Jdideh or Haret Hreik.

Alla yer7amak ya Rafic. Tu étais un gros ange joufflu.
Beirut is not only downtown. It's other neighborhoods which he neglected as well.

Tourists might go to Tarik El Jdideh or Haret Hreik if those neighborhoods were bustling with activities and markets.

Di3an Hamra kamen, it used to be the DT of Beirut and now it's a sh*thole. I remember iyyem el Horseshoe bil Hamra wo ba3den the lively pubs.

Hamra is now infested with SSNP rats, Leftist Hemingway-wannabes, and Syrian beggars...
I avoid the place like the plague.

I don't buy into the big fat lie that Rafic Hariri is the reason behind all our economies woes.
Yes he did borrow money to rebuild Beirut, but during his tenure tourism was booming and his foreign relations drew foreign investments that helped offset the debt.

What do Aoun and HA have to offer?
no one should be buying into anything in this economy, a smart guy like you should be renting, more flexibility 🙃

Sehet l Burj is a desolate parking, instead of being the once proud sou2 cha3be and bazar involving jewelry and many merchants.
During his tenure he stopped national production in favor of importing cheaper products.

Also, Sanioura was his finance minister. Or do we neglect that Sanfoura looted the state? And if Sanfoura had tendencies to loot the State, we ought to ask ourselves who taught him to do so... (Hint : his teacher built his own grave).

Finally, notwithstanding the fact that Solidere is shady and that many people were forced to give up their rightful property in exchange for shares (I had two uncles that suffered from this, but one of them relented and finally sold it dirt cheap, while the other's heirs are clinging to the shares they cannot sell), need it be reminded that 2001 was the year where Lebanon peaked the bankruptcy that was supposed to happen but only got postponed due to the infamous Paris 1 and 2 conferences whose pledges never were implemented?

What of the 40% interest rates banks imposed on loans given to the Government through BDL? Or the shady dollarizing of the LL, or more, when the currency was manipulated during 1996-1997?

Some might say that Hariri's plan was to borrow and wait for the Camp David peace plan to happen, thereby having the debt slashed (How? Why? God knows), but Hariri's plan to loot, steal, build clientalism were of his own machinations, whether before or after the failure of the Peace Accord, and him satisfying the Syrian Regime and Saudi Arabia did not contribute to Lebanon's increased existence as a respectable and sovereign entity ...

But who cares? At least he educated some families that became blind followers and "built downtown".

All we know is he went away with a blast.

Eh, ma 3ande mishkle bi hal mawdoo3 for keeping DT an upscale area for upscale tourists.

bas 3ende mishkle bil neglect that he's done with other neighborhoods.

you can be a sha3be neighborhood or a sha3be market but at least 2ammenlon the basics. In Barcelona the Boqueriya market is a very sha3be market yet it's very well made for normal tourists and locals alike.

Thank God our beautiful DT looks nothing like La Rambla. It's the seediest and trashiest place I've ever seen.
Barcelona as a whole looks like a South American slum.
