    The United States will continue to train local security forces in Syria and maintain a military presence in the country as long as required to defeat Daesh, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Tuesday.

    “The United States will maintain a conditions-based and ISIS-focused military presence in Syria. As part of that presence, we will continue to train local security forces in Syria,” Tillerson said.

    In northern Syria, Turkey is fighting to dismantle the armed Kurdish presence along the border, heightening tensions between Ankara and Washington, which has supported the groups now being attacked by its fellow member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

    “We are keenly aware of the legitimate security concerns of Turkey, our coalition partner and NATO ally,” Tillerson said. “We will continue to be completely transparent with Turkey about our efforts in Syria to defeat ISIS [Daesh], and we stand by our NATO ally in its counterterrorism efforts.”

    Tillerson announcement comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the US earlier in the day to “stop this theater with Daesh in Syria,” adding that a decision by the US to continue to fund the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia would affect Turkey’s decisions.

    The situation in the region escalated earlier this year, after US Col. Thomas Veale said that the US-led coalition had been training the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to create a 30,000-strong force to maintain security along Syria’s borders.

    Following the revelation, Turkey launched an operation dubbed “Olive Branch” in Syria’s Kurds-dominated Afrin. The operation is carried out against Kurdish SDF-affiliated People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara believes have links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), designated as a terrorist organization in Turkey.

    The exact designation of the Turkish troops that are to lead the attack on Janadaris or the outfit they belonging to has not been disclosed.

    At the present time, Turkey-led forces control most of the countryside west of Janadaris and have moved to within several kilometers of the town’s gates via this direction.

    Should the Turkish Army and allied militias take Janadaris from Kurdish forces, it will represent the first major victory of Ankara’s Olive Branch operation in Afrin.

    To this end, it is yet to be seen whether or not Kurdish paramilitary fighters choose to make a stand to defend Janadaris – one of the largest towns in the Afrin region.

    BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:15 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a massive offensive in the southern suburbs of Damascus, today, targeting the Islamist rebels inside the imperative Yarmouk Camp District.

    ISIS began the offensive on Tuesday by storming Haifa Street in western Yarmouk; this led to a fierce confrontation with the Islamist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

    Following an intense battle, the Islamic State was able to capture Haifa Street, forcing the remaining Islamist rebels to retreat towards the northern part of the Yarmouk Camp.

    As a result of this advance, the Islamic State has captured most of the Yarmouk Camp, leaving only a small portion of the district under the control of the Islamist rebels.

    Possible solution (allowing #SAA to take control of the city #Afrin) maybe the best solution to save #Turkey from being further embarrassed as no real achievement has been registered and for Kurds to save their families from the indiscriminate bombing.
    ++++
    #Kurds in #Afrin are showing greater flexibility with the government of #Damascus. The negotiation are improving even more and the #Syrian Army is oiling its guns to move in the enclave. Few more points to clear up still and #Turkey may be forced to stop the attack soon.
